Story of Haughton Tea

Pure Sri Lankan Tea

History of Haughton Teas

In the early 1930s, the lush landscape of the Ratnapura district began to transform under the vision of two industrious superintendents, Andrew William Ruxton and Willie Berry. Together, they cleared vast stretches of virgin jungle to establish what is now known as the Haughton tea plantation. Ruxton, a native of Newburgh, Scotland, had arrived in Ceylon at the age of 17 in 1910 as a trainee planter, or “creeper.” Over the next three decades, he not only honed his skills but also built one of the region's premier tea factories, overseeing a sprawling plantation that would become a cornerstone of the local tea industry. Their pioneering efforts laid the foundation for a legacy that continues to thrive today.

Some words about us

The Legacy Continues

Fast forward to today, Haughton Teas remains a symbol of tradition and quality, having been acquired by Ruhunu Development Contractors & Engineers (Pvt) Ltd (RDCE). This acquisition marked a new chapter for the brand, bringing modern advancements to the tea production process while preserving the heritage and values established by its founder.

In a remarkable effort to reconnect with the roots of the company, the current Vice President of Haughton Teas, Mr. Sahansa Maliduwapathirana, managed to track down Mike Ruxton, the son of Andrew William Ruxton, in Surrey, UK. This historic meeting with the descendant of the original founder reaffirmed the enduring legacy of Haughton Teas. Mike Ruxton, proud of his family’s connection to one of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious tea estates, shared stories and memories that highlight the estate’s significance through the generations.

"Come, oh come, ye tea-thirsty restless ones—the kettle boils, bubbles and sings, musically."
