Colombo, July 28, 2024 — The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has announced the establishment of a National Sustainability Standard for Ceylon Tea, set to be implemented by the end of 2024. This initiative aims to strengthen the country’s position in the global tea market while addressing critical issues such as climate change and the welfare of plantation workers.
The standard focuses on promoting regenerative agricultural practices, ensuring low-carbon tea production, and enhancing the sustainability of the entire tea value chain. “Sri Lanka is committed to maintaining its reputation for producing premium-quality tea while ensuring that our production methods are environmentally sustainable,” said Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at a recent convention organized by the Colombo Tea Traders Association and the Sri Lanka Tea Board.
The initiative is seen as a crucial step to align with global standards and cater to evolving consumer preferences that favor sustainable and ethically produced goods.
