Commitment to Sustainability
Commitment to Sustainability
At Haughton Teas, our commitment to sustainability is at the core of everything we do. As a brand under Ruhunu Development Contractors & Engineers (Pvt) Ltd. (RDCE), we share the company's dedication to responsible business practices that support both the environment and the communities in which we operate.
Eco-friendly Plantation Practices
Our tea estates, including the renowned Haughton Estate, are situated in the pristine natural environment of Kalawana, bordering the Sinharaja Rain Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We recognize the responsibility that comes with operating in such an ecologically sensitive area, and we are committed to preserving the biodiversity and natural beauty of these regions.
To ensure minimal environmental impact, we have adopted sustainable farming techniques that promote the health of our land and the surrounding ecosystem. This includes responsible land management, soil conservation practices, and careful use of natural resources to reduce our carbon footprint. By maintaining the natural balance of the land, we produce high-quality tea that reflects the richness of the Sri Lankan environment.
Supporting Local Communities
Sustainability for us extends beyond environmental protection—it encompasses our deep commitment to the social and economic well-being of the people who work on our plantations. Our estates, such as Haughton Estate, provide employment for over 250 individuals directly, and an additional 250 through indirect work. We also support thousands of other individuals involved in the tea supply chain, from smallholder farmers to factory workers.
We believe in improving the quality of life for our workers and their families. This commitment is reflected in our focus on community development initiatives, such as housing projects for estate workers, infrastructure improvements, and access to healthcare and education for the families who live and work on our estates. Our vision is to create a sustainable future not just for our business, but for the communities that are integral to its success.
Nature Rights Plantations
Our sustainability efforts are spearheaded by Nature Rights Plantations, a key division of RDCE focused on environmentally conscious agriculture. Nature Rights Plantations is dedicated to operating in harmony with nature, using sustainable methods to cultivate both tea and other agricultural products. Through this initiative, we are able to provide a livelihood for over 1,000 families directly and indirectly benefit more than 3,000 individuals across Sri Lanka.
We believe that taking care of our people is essential to achieving long-term sustainability. That is why we invest in continuous training and development programs for our employees, ensuring that they have the skills needed to thrive in their roles while also promoting personal and social development. Our workers are not just employees—they are part of our extended family.
A Greener Future
At Haughton Teas, our sustainability vision is aligned with the global movement toward greener practices. We are constantly exploring new ways to enhance our sustainability efforts, whether through more efficient resource use, reducing waste in our operations, or embracing renewable energy sources.
As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our goal to produce exceptional tea while protecting the environment and supporting the people who are at the heart of our operations. By maintaining our focus on sustainability, we ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the same high-quality Ceylon Tea while preserving the beauty and vitality of the land that makes it possible.
